In Celebration: Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month

As Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month comes to a close today, The Allyship Committee wanted to take a moment to honor this celebration and reflect on how we can continue to uplift and learn from Latin American and Hispanic communities throughout the year.

Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month recognizes the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The start date (Sept 15) marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua with Mexico and Chile following soon after).

In keeping with the Allyship Committee’s mission to support, educate, and celebrate historically marginalized and diverse groups, we invite you to explore a few resources that highlight the richness and impact of Latinx heritage:

• Learn about Hispanic and Latino Heritage month from the National Museum of the American Latino. Explore why this month is important, and ways to commemorate it.
• Support a Hispanic or Latino-owned business in your community. 
• Reflect on the following questions:
  • Where do I see gaps in representation or inclusion in my day-to-day life (professional or personal)? What’s a step I can take to close one of those gaps?
  • Who is missing from my social circle? Why?
  • How am I sourcing perspectives in my work? Whose voices are missing from the room?
  • How can I translate appreciation into action? Mentorship? Sponsorship? Community support?
