Prefer reading over watching? Below is the complete transcript from our Attorney Spotlight interview with Jeff Bridges, Paragon Legal Attorney.

Dana Shaker:

Thank you so much for your time today, Jeff. We’re thrilled to have you, and we’re excited to spotlight you here as one of our attorneys at Paragon.

Jeff Bridges:

Thank you.

Dana Shaker:

What’s one thing about you, either personally or professionally, that you would want every client to know?

Jeff Bridges:

I was doing privacy work long before there were any real privacy laws in the United States, except for something like the Privacy Act of 1974.

I was practicing when HIPAA came along and when all of the changes developed in the U.S. and the EU. I’ve had the opportunity to grow up with the field. Because of that, I’ve seen the discipline evolve from something very fragmented into something much more mature, with a clear path forward.

And with AI coming into the picture, the level of risk has changed dramatically. The risks we considered in the 1990s and early 2000s are nothing compared to what we face now. It’s something that requires constant attention, and that’s part of what makes it interesting—it changes so quickly.

Dana Shaker:

What qualities do you think it takes to succeed in the Paragon work model?

Jeff Bridges:

Flexibility. If nothing else, you’ve got to be able to adapt. You have to recognize what your client needs and address those needs in a timely manner. And if one approach isn’t working, you have to pivot.

A lot of it comes down to being flexible and adapting to your client’s environment.

Dana Shaker:

I think that’s a fantastic answer. It’s something we tell our team members all the time, especially when they’re new to project work. Every client is different, so flexibility really is key.

Dana Shaker:

So, when you’re coming onto a new project, you’re often the “new person.” Do you have any tips for making those first few days or weeks go smoothly?

Jeff Bridges:

Be accessible. Be visible. Be open to questions and invite them. At the same time, be a sponge—absorb everything you can.

Those first few days are critical for getting grounded and establishing a strong foundation.

Dana Shaker:

Has working at Paragon influenced your view of the legal profession?

Jeff Bridges:

Tremendously. I’ve been in practice for nearly 40 years. I started in litigation at a small firm and eventually burned out.

I spent years in senior management roles in records management, privacy, and information governance. Now, what I’m doing feels like the perfect evolution. I can take my leadership experience and apply it to legal work in a more practical way.

The Paragon model allows you to focus on accomplishing a purpose without getting caught up in organizational politics. It’s made practicing law enjoyable again.

I’ve even had people ask about retirement, and I say my plan is to work until noon on the day of my funeral and take PTO for the afternoon.

Dana Shaker:

That says a lot—you must love what you do.

What’s your favorite depiction of a lawyer in a movie or TV show?

Jeff Bridges:

Paul Newman in The Verdict. It’s a powerful portrayal of a small, struggling lawyer navigating ethical challenges. It really resonated with me early in my career and helped inspire me to keep going.

Dana Shaker:

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

Jeff Bridges:

A mentor once told me, “You’ve only just begun to learn. Learn every day, and do good.”

That stuck with me. I consider myself a perpetual student.

Dana Shaker:

That’s great advice.

Can you share a time when you helped a client solve a problem?

Jeff Bridges:

One client had been retaining emails indefinitely—even across system migrations. That creates a significant risk.

There wasn’t a single solution. It required building trust and educating stakeholders on the risks. Over time, we implemented policies so that record emails were retained properly, and non-record emails were deleted after a certain period.

It was a long process, but the outcome was worth it. They improved compliance, reduced risk, and gained peace of mind.

Dana Shaker:

It sounds like building trust was a big part of that. Do you feel like building trust is one of the biggest challenges?

Jeff Bridges:

Absolutely. Trust starts on day one. You build it by being honest about what you know and what you don’t, and by working collaboratively.

It takes time, but it’s essential.

Dana Shaker:

I completely agree. Jeff, thank you so much for your time today. This has been a wonderful conversation, and we’re excited to share your insights with our team and clients.

Jeff Bridges:

Thank you, Dana. It was great speaking with you.
